NYC 2025: Comptroller Brad Lander Joins Mayoral Race, Cuomo Next?

Jul 31, 2024

"City Comptroller Brad Lander announced his bid for mayor on Tuesday, confirming one of the worst-kept secrets in New York political circles and formalizing a serious challenge to New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ reelection prospects. Lander rolled out his plans, reported more than six weeks ago, in a pre-recorded video focused on affordability and public safety," said POLITICO.

“Lander, a 55-year-old resident of Park Slope, Brooklyn, becomes the first candidate to formally announce that he will try to derail Adams from a second term, a rare challenge of an incumbent mayor and a sign of what could become a competitive ranked-choice primary. Two other left-leaning Democratic contenders — former city Comptroller Scott Stringer and state Sen. Zellnor Myrie of Brooklyn — have opened exploratory committees and begun fundraising for mayoral bid,” reported Gothamist/WNYC.

Mayor Adams (D) faces a historically low 28% approval rate from local voters, and there remains the open question of what disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo will do next with his large campaign account.
