NYS Assembly 2024: Suffolk, Nassau, Queens Each Have 2 Key Races

Going into this year's elections, Democrats have a supermajority in the State Assembly - 102 Democrats vs. 48 Republicans. There are 2 top-tier Assembly races in each of LIBOR's 3 counties:

District 4 (Coram, Gordon Heights, Three Villages): "Democrats have spent $61,000 on behalf of former Port Jefferson trustee Rebecca Kassay. Republicans have spent $16,000 for incumbent Assemblymember Ed Flood (R-Port Jefferson). Flood won the seat in 2022, but this year's race could be impacted by Flood’s recent disbarment as an attorney," reported Newsday.

District 11 (Amityville, Lindenhurst, Wyandanch): After winning by 1% in 2022, Assemblymember Kimberly Jean-Pierre (D) is not running for reelection. "Democrats picked Kwani O’Pharrow, a retired New York City police detective, as their candidate to replace Jean-Pierre. Republicans had a similar idea, backing fellow retired NYPD officer Joseph Cardinale for the post," reported City & State.

District 16 (Herricks, Manhasset, Port Washington): Assemblymember Gina Sillitti (D-Manorhaven) faces Great Neck Republican Daniel Norber in a competitive district some analysts have taken for granted. Sillitti held on during the "red wave" of 2022 with 52% of the vote, but Norber is much more organized and well-funded than her last Republican challenger.

District 21 (Baldwin, Freeport, Lynbrook): “Griffin versus Curran – both of whom have had that seat – is shaping up to be a classic nail-biter," Lawrence Levy, dean of suburban studies at Hofstra University, told Newsday. Rockville Centre Democrat Judy Griffin defeated Republican Assemblymember Brian Curran (R) 53-47% in 2018, but Curran then defeated Griffin by 0.1% in 2022.

District 23 (Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Rockaways): "Big spending has been seen in the race for District 23’s Assembly seat, which will see a rematch between Democratic incumbent Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato and Republican candidate Tom Sullivan. Two years ago, the same matchup was decided by only 15 votes," reported The Queens Eagle.

District 40 (Downtown Flushing, Mitchell Gardens, Murray Hill): "Phillip Wang (R), a local doctor, is outspending Ron Kim, the Democratic incumbent. Wang has spent $61,000 to Kim’s $28,000. And though Wang also currently has more money in the bank than Kim, the incumbent is outraising Wang by nearly two to one," said The Queens Eagle. In 2022, Assemblymember Kim won with 51%.
