NYC 2025: Mayor Adams Running Independent Could Mean 5-Way November Election

Apr 9, 2025

"New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) withdrew from the city’s Democratic primary on Thursday and said he would instead run for reelection as an independent, a move intended to buy him time to save a campaign deeply wounded by a bribery scandal and liberal anger over his warm relationship with President Donald Trump," reported the Associated Press.

The City news site reported that the Working Families Party is petitioning to put a placeholder on their line to await the results of the Democratic Primary. WFP would most likely oppose former Gov. Andrew Cuomo if he won, but back one of the other major Democratic candidates. As a result, we could see a potential five-way race in November 2025:

  1. The Democratic nominee.
  2. The Republican nominee.
  3. A WFP candidate if Cuomo is the Democratic nomination winner.
  4. Mayor Adams running as an independent.
  5. Attorney Jim Walden running as an independent.
