NYC Mayor: Cuomo Concedes Democratic Nomination to Mamdani

Jun 25, 2025

With 99% of scanners reporting, New York State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani (D-Astoria) won 1st place on 43.5% of ballots counted in the crowded New York City Democratic mayoral primary. This was a commanding lead over the second-place finisher, former Governor and Clinton HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo (D).

After unexpectedly conceding the Democratic nod last night, Cuomo had 36.4% of the vote. This "all but guaranteed" Mamdani the Democratic nomination for mayor, "though the contest will technically be decided by a ranked-choice tally on July 1," said NPR.

"Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, ran a grassroots campaign relentlessly focused on affordability, moving a lot of younger voters to the ballot box, defying polls and upending conventional political wisdom," reported WNYC's Gothamist.
