City of Yes: NYC Council Speaker Schedules Hearings, Wants Changes

"Mayor Eric Adams’ sweeping 'City of Yes' plan to overhaul land use rules and allow more housing development across New York City is approaching a final vote in the City Council later this year — but the Council speaker says it won’t earn members’ approval without serious investments in affordable housing and other community needs," reported WNYC's Gothamist. "Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (D) said in a statement that the mayor’s current residential zoning proposal doesn’t guarantee that new homes will be constructed or that they’ll be affordable for New Yorkers... Speaker Adams has prioritized new housing development and affordable homeownership during her time in office. The speaker and Council are also suing the mayor to enact measures they passed last year that would give more low-income renters access to housing vouchers."

"On Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22, the New York City Council’s Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises will hold two days of public meetings on the Department of City Planning’s “City of Yes Zoning for Housing Opportunity” citywide zoning reform proposal. October 21 will be reserved for testimony from Administration officials and October 22 will be a public hearing reserved for testimony from the public," announced Speaker Adams, a Democrat elected by South Ozone Park, South Jamaica, and Rochdale Village.
