Pass The SALT: US House Raises SALT Cap in "Big Beautiful Bill"

May 28, 2025

"Republican House members from New York praised the bill, particularly that higher cap. SALT lets taxpayers subtract certain state and local taxes from their federal taxable income. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act previously capped this deduction at $10,000. The 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' raises it to $40,000 for households earning under $500,000. Both the cap and the income threshold would increase by 1% every year," reported 1010 WINS radio news.

US Rep. Laura Gillen lead Democrats' criticism of the bill and especially the SALT compromise, testifying before the Rules Committee on her amendment to repeal the SALT cap altogether. US House Speaker Johnson (R) opposed that.

Newsday's Editorial Board hailed the SALT compromise, and blamed President Trump for why a full SALT cap repeal failed to occur.
